Trevor Project (https://www.thetrevorproject.org/) is an organization that specializes in helping the LGBTQ youth between the ages of 13 and 24, as well as their friends and allies. This organization created TrevorSpace, which is an online social networking community that strives to maintain a safe space online for LGBTQ youth.
Training for volunteers takes place on a quarterly basis and volunteers must do any training before they can participate. After applying as a volunteer, you will have an interview. If this interview is successful, you will then receive a background check. Then, you complete your training and you are able to help. This training takes 40 hours, which includes learning about risk factors for those in this community, see webinar lectures, and various other things that helps them out in their time of need. If you are volunteering online, you will handle text messages from people who are struggling that need your help.
There are a few benefits of volunteering here. You can receive valuable training that can help you in your personal and professional lives, such as crisis de-escalation and active listening. You can also take comfort in knowing that you are helping people during their time of need get through some hard things. You are having a positive impact on someone else’s life.
As a volunteer, you have a minimum requirement of one year of volunteering. During this year, you are expected to take on 3 or 4 4-hour shifts every month.
In 1994, the founders of this organization saw a one-man show named “Word of Mouth”, where a writer and performer James Lecesne played the role of Trevor. Eventually this play turned into an award-winning and critically acclaimed short film named “Trevor”, which inspired this organization to be founded in 1998.
