The role/expectations What does the work schedule look like? Please give as much detail as possible

    Role Context:

In Mexico, education is the key in ensuring that children will have an opportunity to gain employment. The lack of education is one of the most significant contributing factors to poverty; there are virtually no opportunities for people without education in Mexico. Children can be helped to begin breaking the cycle of poverty by teaching them the importance of education from a very young age. Family values such as nurturing children and encouraging them to do well in school promotes a better chance at breaking the cycle of poverty. As the educational needs and demands of our children and young people have grown, it has been recognized that a dedicated education volunteer is required to (1) assist our Education Coordinator in delivering our Education Program, and (2) support our children and young adults with their educational needs.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

      ● Assist with homework and tutoring sessions for our children and young adults, Monday – Friday 3pm – 5.30pm, focusing on any difficulties our children and young adults may be experiencing in their schooling. ● Assist our younger children in improving their reading and writing skills. ● Assist our Homeschool Teacher with specific tasks for small groups or one to one, working with our children with learning and behavioural challenges. ● Assist in maintaining the education records of each Misión México child and young adult, including the tracking of their grades and educational achievements. ● Help to identify strategies within the Misión México environment that could enhance academic progress. ● Work closely with the Education Coordinator to organise additional education workshops or projects.

    Qualifications, Experience and other requirements:

      ● Experience in teaching children and/or young adults (evidence to be cited). ● Experience working with children or young people from backgrounds of trauma and/or disadvantaged backgrounds. ● Understanding of developmental delays and how to support optimal learning outcomes in these contexts. ● Fluent Spanish literacy, basic in English language. ● Minimum of a 3 months commitment. ● Valid ‘working with children check’ and undergo a Criminal Records Check prior to engagement. Subsequently must report any criminal charges or court appearances. ● Two references from previous employers.

    Additional:

Time off will be negotiated with the Education Coordinator. No weekend hours would be required unless field trips or educational events are scheduled. This job description is not exhaustive, and is provided to assist the postholder to know what her/his duties are. It may be amended from time to time.

Volunteering at Misión México is not a holiday but a busy work time; however it is incredibly rewarding and you will walk away from the place with the satisfaction that you have made a difference in the lives of the children.
