Distributed Proofreaders Online Volunteering

Distributed Proofreaders (https://www.pgdp.net) converts regular public domain paper-based books into e-books and distributes them to the world via Project Gutenberg (https://www.gutenberg.org/). Our books are in English and other languages and our volunteers come from around the globe. Since our founding in 2000, we have converted more than 37,000 books!

USA

We have many different types of volunteers. Some scan books and prepare them for proofreading, some proofread, some format the pages (marking text that is in italics or bolded, etc.),
By dividing the workload into individual pages, our system allows many volunteers to work on a book at the same time, which significantly speeds up the e-book creation process. Once the images of the pages of a book have been scanned into a computer, those scans are converted to text by special character recognition programs. Then thousands of volunteers around the world proofread and correct the computer text page-by-page using a specially-created web-based interface.

The books we create become an important and free resource that is shared by people around the world. Come join us in making that happen!

New volunteers are always welcome and may spend as much or as little time volunteering as they like! There is no commitment expected beyond the understanding that volunteers should do their best.
